Title of the Thesis : Studies Of The Electric Field Gradients in Non-cubic Metals Using 57Fe Mössbauer Spectroscopy Year of Award of the Degree : 1980 Supervised By : Prof. G N Rao and Prof. R M Singru , Ex-Professors Of Dept. Of Physics, IIT Kanpur
Using FIB, we have studied a number of phenomena and used them for fabrication of useful structures at about 20 nm resolutions. Bending of a nano cantilever on irradiation by Ga ion beam studied in my group has attracted wide attention and has been greatly appreciated by the community. Other areas are making nano devices and studying thermal effects on irradiation.
Effect of irradiation by Carbon ion beam and proton ion beam in MeV range on Highly Oriented Pyrolitic Graphite has been studied. The magnetization induced in HOPG in our experiments stands highest till date. VSM and Magnetoresistance are the probing parameters.
We synthesize nanoparticles of magnetic oxides using chemical methods. We have grown Zn-ferrites, Ni-ferrites and mixed ferrites using hydrothermal processing where the synthesis is done at high pressure (~10-20 atm) and reasonably low temperatures (~180-220 0 C). We have also developed expertise on co precipitation followed by calcinations and using this we are now able to make nanoparticles of any desired size from 5 nm onwards. A special characteristic is that the particles have a very narrow variance in the size. We have also developed a UREA hydrolysis method where the nanoparticles are synthesized at a temperature as low as 100oC. The powder so obtained is well dispersed and has significantly different magnetic properties. Nanoparticles often have large number of crystal defects such as grain boundary defects and vavancies, these are studied using positron annihilation lifetime measurement. We have found interesting results on the location and diffusion of defects in nanoparticles in these studies. The magnetic properties are studied using Mössbauer spectroscopy and Magnetization measurement.
Fe-based alloys of Fe-Al and also Fe-Al with a ternary addition are studied. More specifically, we have studied the effect of mechanical cold working on the defects creation and subsequent redistribution of the component species in the available lattice sites. We have for the first time developed a simple procedure using electrodeposition, to form alloys of highly immiscible system at room temperature. It does not need any heat treatment or mechanical impacts. Even the local temperatures are not raised as the whole process takes place in solution at room temperature.
We have undertaken a systematic study of meteorites using Mössbauer spectroscopy. We have discovered new symmetries of classification of meteorites which is very significant. We have worked on HED meteorites supposed to come from the asteroid Vesta which is being closely studied by DAWN mission of NASA. The other area where we have worked is Mass extinction boundaries. By analyzing the 65 million years old sediments from Cretaceous-Tertiary (K/T) junctions from a number of sites, we have investigated the iron mineralogy after the impact killing the majority of the life form. We have provided vital inputs about the causes of the most intense mass extinction 250 million years ago using iron mineralogy.
